About the Program
The Secondary Teacher Assistant’s (STA) key function is to provide support to the Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) Teachers in developing an inspiring and educationally effective regional Secondary Bait-ul Ilm system (Grades 7 to 12). The STA will work under supervision of the Teacher Lead (TL) and the STEP Teachers to support teaching and learning of the Secondary Curriculum developed by the Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS). The STA’s main focus is to assist Secondary Teachers in offering a conducive, stimulating and meaningful learning environment for religious education of Secondary Students. 

We are looking for motivated, passionate and dedicated individuals who have a desire to work with the adolescent population of our Jamat.  Induction to the role and training will be provided. The STAs will have an opportunity to work as part of the Quebec Secondary Bait-ul Ilm (BUI) team on curriculum, teaching and learning initiatives and when necessary administrative work for secondary religious education.
About the Role
  • Assists and supports the STEP team in providing creative curricular experiences beyond classroom programs such as field trips, residential and day camps and JK-based engagements
  • Assists STEP teachers in their weekend and weekday classes to ensure high quality implementation of the Secondary curriculum within a well-managed and conducive environment
  • Supports the STEP team in meaningful and effective parental engagement
  •  Assists STEP Teachers in preparing material and lesson plans for weekly BUI classes
  • Assists the STEP team in providing an ethos of care, commitment and concern towards BUI secondary students to ensure that the ethics of Shia Ismaili Tariqah are embodied within the BUI community
  • Works with the STEP Team to develop, implement and evaluate parental and community engagement strategies that increase understanding of the IIS curricular perspectives

About You
General Skills Required:

  • Artistic, educational and technological skills are important assets for this role
  • Maturity and sensitivity required to fulfill an educational role for the Jamati institutions- proactive, punctual and professional in all areas of work and in representing our institutions
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and development
  • Understanding of and experience in working with young adults, adolescents and/or children is desirable
  • Initiative to work collaboratively with other faculties and portfolios
  • Excellent computer skills

Educational Qualifications and Work Experience

The ideal candidate will be a passionate educator, sensitive to the challenges and opportunities involved in the educational leadership and delivery of the non-formal religious education system in Canada.

Specific requirements include:

  • A University degree in Education, Social Sciences, Arts, Media or Humanities. 
  • Outstanding graduates from other backgrounds will be considered. 
  • Current university students in the fields of Education, Teaching, Child Development, Arts and Religious Studies will be considered.
  • Excellent written and spoken bilingual skills in French and English and fluent in spoken Persian/Dari.
  • Experience within the Jamati/Imamati institutions especially Bait-ul Ilm in a voluntary or professional capacity is an asset
  • Knowledge of effective educational practices an asset
  • Experience with and competency in Islamic history and literature and the IIS curriculum is an asset.
  • Ability to work evenings/weekends and to occasionally travel within Quebec

Remuneration and working hours:
This is a part-time position. A fixed stipend will be paid commensurate with qualifications and hours of commitment.
