About the Program
Bait-ul Ilm Primary program delivers the IIS Primary Ta’lim Curriculum for Kindergarten to Grade 6 students to:
  • To advance the children’s knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of Islam
  • To help them acquire a historical and cultural perspective of Islam and of the Ismaili Tariqah
  • To inspire in them loyalty and devotion to the Imam of the time 
  • To develop their understanding of themselves as Ismaili Muslims within the unity of Islam
  • To encourage them to practice the faith as a necessary and integral part of their lives
  • To guide them in the formation of attitudes and conduct in keeping with Islamic Ethics
  • To foster in them the spirit of voluntary service to community, society & humanity
About the Role
A Bait-ul Ilm Primary teacher is a community leader who helps to nurture knowledge, skills and values in our young murids about who they are as Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. In this endeavor, the Institute of Ismaili Studies Ta’lim curriculum is an essential tool to develop student understanding of our faith and how our faith can enrich our lives. Primary Bait-ul Ilm teachers bring dedication in their service commitment, passion about the importance of religious education as a formative influence in the lives of children, care and love for our young murids, and the desire to develop effective and engaging teaching practice through ongoing learning. The impact of service offered by Primary Bait-ul Ilm teachers is long-standing and rewarding to self and to community.
 A Bait-ul Ilm Teacher will:
1.Demonstrate Commitment and Dedication to the Position:
  • By being present and punctual at each class, every Saturday 
  • By attending Professional Development workshops and webinars 
  • By being very familiar with the relevant curricular material
  • By collaborating with the Teacher Mentor (TM) to optimize learning experiences and environments
2.Care for Students:
  • By modeling and encouraging ethical conduct. 
  • By setting a standard for all to feel safe and respected in the classroom and in all interactions, to the best of one’s ability. 
  • By ensuring that each child has equal opportunities for active participation in class activities. 
  • By respecting the unique potential of each child to learn and to contribute.  
3.Implement the Curriculum in an Engaging Manner 
  • By using the Primary Ta’lim Curriculum as the main teaching resource
  • By coming to class having internalized the lesson for the week, as outlined in the National Curriculum(Pre-Primary) and the Curriculum Support Package (CSP)(Primary). 
  • By coming to class having prepared materials for activities ahead of time.  
3.Engage Parents Positively 
  • By communicating with parents in meaningful ways to support the spiritual and holistic development of their children, such as through weekly Learning Logs. 
  • By working with parents as partners, appreciating the value, role, challenges, and joys of parenthood.    
  • By creating the environment in which parents, students, and teachers are all considered partners in learning. 
About You
Must have skills:
  • Pursuing post-secondary education or higher is preferred. 
  • Teaching certificate or degree would be an asset 
  • Be able to work well with others 
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills 
  • Willing to learn new strategies of teaching curriculum in an engaging manner 
  • Able to commit on Saturdays 
Nice to have skills:
  • Fluent in English 
  • Completion of BUI at Secondary level 
  • Other institutional voluntary experience 
  • Experience working with K-6 children Previous teaching, counselling, or coaching experience.
Time Commitment
  • 4 hours/week
  • 15 August 2020 to 30 June 2021
